Protecting Your Website Content From Copying and Scraping

How to protect website content from copying and scraping: AI crawler rules in robots.txt, scraper controls, DMCA takedowns and UAE copyright basics explained.

You cannot make public web content impossible to copy, but you can protect website content well enough to deter casual theft, opt out of most AI training crawlers, slow down bulk scrapers and remove copies quickly when they appear. The practical approach combines four layers: clear ownership signals, crawler controls, technical limits on scraping, and a takedown routine. This guide covers each one, including the newer AI crawler controls that older advice leaves out.

What you can and cannot prevent

Set expectations first. Anything a browser can display, a determined person can copy. Disabling right click, blocking text selection or overlaying images with transparent layers mostly annoys real visitors and screen reader users, while a copier simply views the page source or takes a screenshot.

Layer 1: make ownership obvious

Content theft is easier to fight when your ownership is easy to prove.

  • Publish dates and authors on articles, guides and case studies, so the first published version is clear.
  • Keep originals. Store drafts, raw photo files with metadata and design source files. These are your evidence if a dispute arises.
  • Add a copyright notice and terms of use that say how content may and may not be reused, including automated collection.
  • Watermark selectively. A subtle mark on original photography, product shots and infographics helps; watermarking everything rarely does.
  • Use canonical tags so that when partners syndicate your articles with permission, search engines know which version is the original.

Layer 2: control AI scrapers with robots.txt

This is the part most older guides miss. Several AI companies publish the names of their crawlers and say they follow robots.txt, so you can opt out of some AI uses without leaving search results.

What robots.txt can and cannot do

robots.txt is a public file at the root of your domain that tells crawlers which paths they may visit. The standard, RFC 9309, states plainly that these rules are not a form of access authorisation. Reputable crawlers follow them; bad actors ignore them. Treat robots.txt as a clear statement of your wishes, not a lock.

Crawler names worth knowing

  • GPTBot: OpenAI's crawler for content that may be used to train its models. OpenAI's crawler documentation also lists OAI-SearchBot, used to show sites in ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages when a user asks and to which robots.txt rules may not apply.
  • Google-Extended: a control token, not a separate crawler. According to Google's crawler documentation, it governs whether content may be used to train Gemini models and for grounding in some Google AI products, and does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
  • ClaudeBot: Anthropic's crawler. Anthropic says its bots honour robots.txt directives.

Crawler names and their purposes change, so check each company's current documentation before you edit the file.

A sample rule set

To block training crawlers while staying visible in search, a robots.txt file might contain these lines:

  • User-agent: GPTBot
  • Disallow: /
  • User-agent: Google-Extended
  • Disallow: /
  • User-agent: ClaudeBot
  • Disallow: /

Leave Googlebot and Bingbot alone unless you want to disappear from search. One misplaced line can deindex a whole site, so have the file reviewed, ideally as part of a technical SEO review.

The trade off

Blocking AI crawlers protects your content from some training uses, but it can also reduce how often AI assistants cite or link to you. For a business that wants to be recommended by AI search tools, blocking search related crawlers while allowing training crawlers, or the other way round, is a deliberate choice. Decide by page type: you might protect paid research while leaving service pages open.

Layer 3: slow down scrapers technically

Crawlers that ignore robots.txt need technical controls. None is perfect, but together they raise the cost of scraping.

  • Rate limiting at the server or CDN, so one address cannot request thousands of pages in minutes.
  • Bot management features from your CDN or firewall provider that challenge suspicious traffic. Many providers now offer specific options for AI crawlers.
  • Put premium content behind a login, such as reports, course material or pricing tools. Content inside an account area or an app is far harder to harvest than open pages; the same thinking applies to member features in mobile apps.
  • Protect your feeds and APIs. Full text RSS feeds make republishing trivial, so consider summaries. Restrict public API endpoints with keys and limits.
  • Watch your logs. Spikes from one network, odd user agents or sequential page requests show scraping in progress.

Test any change against real users and search engines. An aggressive challenge page that blocks Googlebot or slows mobile visitors costs more than the scraping it stops.

Layer 4: find copies and take them down

Finding copies

Search for distinctive sentences from your pages in quotation marks, run reverse image searches on original photos, and set alerts for your brand and key phrases. Check monthly for your most valuable pages.

Takedown routes

  1. Contact the site owner or host. A short, factual request often works, especially with businesses that copied out of ignorance.
  2. Ask search engines to remove the copy. Google accepts legal removal requests through its legal help pages and handles copyright notices under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). A DMCA takedown notice must identify the specific URLs. Removal from search does not remove the page from the web.
  3. Report to the platform. Social networks and marketplaces have their own intellectual property reporting forms.
  4. Take legal advice for serious or commercial copying.

Copyright in the UAE is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2021 on Copyright and Neighbouring Rights, which secondary sources describe as replacing the earlier 2002 law and covering a broad definition of creative works. Details such as registration with the Ministry of Economy, the grievance process and penalties should be confirmed with the Ministry or an intellectual property lawyer, since this guide relies on secondary summaries rather than the official text.

Building protection into your website

Most of these measures are set up in the website itself: robots.txt and canonical tags, login areas for premium material, feed settings, rate limits and log monitoring. Codeeo's WordPress development and web development teams build sites with these controls in mind, and AI powered features such as the assistants described in website chatbots and AI agents can be designed to use your content without exposing it wholesale. Whether you are launching or reviewing an existing site, contact Codeeo to talk it through with the team in Dubai.

Frequently asked questions

Not in any meaningful way.

Text and images remain available in the page source, browser developer tools and screenshots. Disabling right click also breaks normal behaviour such as opening links in new tabs and can hinder accessibility tools. Spend the effort on ownership records, crawler rules and monitoring instead, which actually help when copying happens.
