Google's Generative Search: What Changed and What to Do Now

Google generative AI search went from an SGE test to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Read the timeline, the effect on traffic and an action list for UAE websites.

Google generative AI search has moved from a small opt in experiment to a standard part of the results page in under three years. AI Overviews now sit above many organic listings, and AI Mode offers a separate conversational search. For UAE businesses, the practical effect is fewer clicks on simple questions, more competition to be cited, and a stronger case for content that answers specific, commercial needs.

This guide gives a short history of what changed, explains what it means for traffic, and ends with an action list you can work through this quarter.

Dates below are given by month and taken from Google's own announcements where possible. Rollouts are staged by country and language, so confirm current availability in the UAE on Google's official blog or Search Central before planning around a specific feature.

2023: the Search Generative Experience test

Google introduced the search generative experience, often shortened to SGE, as an experiment in Search Labs around its developer conference in May 2023. Users had to opt in. The test placed an AI written summary above the results, with links to sources beside it. For most site owners it was something to watch rather than act on, because few searchers saw it.

2024: AI Overviews reach the main results

In May 2024, Google renamed the summaries AI Overviews and began showing them to users in the United States without an opt in, with further countries following later. Early coverage focused on incorrect answers, and Google adjusted when the feature appears. The important change for publishers was simple: an AI summary was now part of normal search for many informational queries.

2025: AI Mode and wider expansion

In March 2025, Google announced AI Mode as a Labs experiment, a separate tab built for longer, multi part questions and follow ups. It opened more widely in the United States during 2025. In October 2025, Google said that AI Mode had expanded to more than 35 additional languages and over 40 more countries and territories, reaching more than 200 in total. Check that announcement and later updates for the exact language and country list, including Arabic support.

Where things stand now

Google's documentation on AI features describes AI Overviews as a quick overview that appears only when Google's systems judge it useful, and Google AI Mode as suited to deeper exploration and comparison. Both may use a technique Google calls query fan out, running several related searches across subtopics and showing a wider set of supporting links than a classic results page.

What changed for search traffic

The headline effect is a rise in zero click searches for simple questions. If a searcher wants a definition, a quick comparison or a list of steps, the AI summary often answers it on the results page.

Who is most exposed

  • Glossary and definition pages. Content that answers one factual question in a sentence is easiest to summarise.
  • Generic how to guides. Pages repeating widely available advice compete with an answer built from many such pages.
  • Top of funnel blog traffic. Visits that rarely converted may fall, which can look alarming in reports even if enquiries hold steady.

Who is less exposed

  • Service and product pages where the searcher intends to buy, book or request a quote.
  • Local searches where the map pack and Business Profile carry the result.
  • Original content such as proprietary process detail, project examples and specific local knowledge.
  • Brand searches, where people already know who they want.

How to read search traffic changes correctly

Google states that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate filter, so look for patterns: impressions holding or rising while clicks fall on informational queries usually points to AI summaries absorbing the answer. Before drawing that conclusion, rule out other causes such as tracking errors, seasonality, migrations and algorithm updates. Our guide to recovering traffic after a failed migration covers the diagnostic steps.

What Google says you do not need

A lot of advice around generative search sells new tactics. Google's documentation is plain on several points:

  • There is no special structured data to add for AI features.
  • There is no requirement for new AI text files or machine readable versions of content.
  • A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link, which means standard SEO still applies.

Site owners who want to limit how their content appears can use the existing preview controls such as nosnippet, data nosnippet, max snippet and noindex. These affect classic results too, so use them with care.

Action list for UAE sites

Work through these in order. The early items protect what you have; the later ones build visibility.

  1. Check crawl access. Make sure robots.txt, your CDN and any bot protection allow Googlebot. Security settings that block crawlers are a common hidden cause of lost visibility.
  2. Segment your reporting. Split Search Console queries into informational, commercial and brand groups, and track clicks and enquiries for each separately.
  3. Strengthen commercial pages. Service pages should answer the real buying questions: scope, process, what affects cost, who it suits and how to start.
  4. Rework thin informational content. Merge overlapping articles, add genuine examples and expert input, and remove pages that serve no reader.
  5. Keep key content in text. Important information hidden in images, PDFs or tabs that load late is harder for any system to use.
  6. Keep structured data consistent. Schema should match what is visible on the page.
  7. Update your Business Profile. Opening hours, categories, services and photos feed local results. Our local SEO service covers this work.
  8. Plan for both languages. If you publish in Arabic and English, track each separately, as AI feature availability and behaviour may differ by language.
  9. Measure leads, not only sessions. Connect form, call and WhatsApp enquiries to landing pages so a drop in informational clicks is judged against actual business results.

Paid search is changing alongside organic results. Our summary of Google Ads changes for UAE advertisers covers the advertising side, and staying visible in AI search goes deeper on being cited. For a routine that keeps your team current, see how to keep up with SEO changes.

Frequently asked questions

Partly.

Preview controls such as nosnippet and max snippet limit how much of a page Google can show, including in AI features, but they also reduce what appears in classic snippets. Blocking Google Extended relates to Google's other AI systems, not to Search. Weigh the trade off carefully, because restricting snippets can lower visibility and clicks across all results.
