Staying Visible in Google AI Overviews and AI Search

AI search optimization for UAE businesses: stay visible in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, and measure it with a prompt panel.

GLOSS & HAMMER: A restaurant owner posting a job

AI search optimization is the work of keeping your business findable, accurately described and linked when people get answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search or Perplexity instead of a list of blue links. It rests on ordinary SEO foundations, plus crawler access for each platform, content that answers questions clearly, and a way to measure visibility that does not rely on rankings alone. This guide covers all three platforms and sets out a simple measurement routine.

Why AI search optimization is about visibility, not just citations

Getting cited in one AI answer is useful, but it is a narrow goal. A UAE business needs to know whether it is mentioned at all for the questions buyers ask, whether the description is correct, and whether any of that turns into visits and enquiries. Those are three different problems:

  • Access: can each AI system actually read your pages?
  • Selection: when it reads them, does it pick your page as a source or mention your brand?
  • Outcome: do those mentions produce traffic, calls or leads you can see?

Most advice focuses on selection. In practice, many sites lose visibility because of access problems they did not know about, or because they never set up a way to see outcomes.

How each platform finds and uses your content

The platforms work differently, and the controls are different too. Confirm the details in each provider's current documentation, as these systems change often.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's page on AI features and your website states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being eligible for normal Search. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Google also describes a technique it calls query fan out, where the system issues several related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages. That means a page can be surfaced for a question it does not target directly, as long as it answers part of the topic well.

Traffic from these features is included in the overall Search traffic in Search Console's Performance report. There is no separate filter for it, which matters for measurement later in this guide.

OpenAI's documentation on its crawlers explains that OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites which block it will not appear in those search answers. A separate crawler, GPTBot, relates to training models. The two are controlled independently in robots.txt, so a business can allow search visibility while opting out of training if it prefers.

Perplexity

Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Its guidance is to allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to appear.

Step one: fix access before anything else

Check access first because it is the cheapest problem to find and the most damaging to miss.

Robots.txt and firewall rules

Open your robots.txt and read it line by line. Blanket rules added to block "AI bots" sometimes catch the search crawlers too. Then check your CDN or hosting firewall. Bot protection settings can return challenges or errors to crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Ask your developer or host to confirm that the search crawlers listed above receive normal pages, using the IP ranges each provider publishes.

Rendering and content in the HTML

If key content only appears after JavaScript runs, some crawlers may see an empty page. Service descriptions, prices you choose to publish, opening hours and contact details should be present in the initial HTML. Our guide to what changed with Google's generative search covers the Google side of this in more detail.

Indexing and snippets

For Google, a page that is not indexed, or that uses nosnippet, cannot be shown in AI features. Check that important pages are indexed in Search Console and that snippet controls are only used where you mean them.

Step two: make your pages easy to select

Once systems can read your pages, the question is whether they choose them. There is no special markup that guarantees this. What helps is the same quality that helps people.

Answer the question near the top

Open each page and section with a direct answer in two or three sentences, then give the detail. Generative systems and readers both benefit when the main point is easy to find.

Cover the follow up questions

Because of query fan out, a page that covers the natural follow ups to a question has more chances to be pulled in. Long tail research is the best source for those follow ups; see our guide to finding long tail keywords UAE buyers actually search.

Be specific and consistent about who you are

AI answers often summarise a business in one line. Make sure that line is likely to be right. State clearly what you do, where you operate and who you serve on the home page, the about page and key service pages. Keep your name, address, phone and service descriptions consistent with your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Inconsistent details give systems conflicting signals.

Show evidence

Pages with real examples, named authors with relevant experience, dates of last update and clear sources are easier to trust. Avoid unsupported claims; they rarely survive summarisation and can mislead customers if repeated.

Step three: measure AI search visibility

Rankings alone no longer describe visibility. A practical measurement routine combines a few sources.

A fixed prompt panel

Write a list of 20 to 40 questions your buyers ask, mixing broad questions, comparisons and specific service questions. Include Arabic questions if you serve Arabic speaking customers. Each month, run the same list in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, and record:

  • whether your brand is mentioned;
  • whether your site is linked as a source, and which page;
  • whether the description of your business is accurate;
  • which competitors appear instead.

Answers vary between sessions, so look for trends over several months rather than reacting to a single run. Use a logged out browser where possible to reduce personalisation.

Referral traffic in analytics

Create a channel or segment in analytics for referrals from AI platforms, such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Track sessions, engagement and conversions from that segment. The volume may be small, but the quality of those visits is worth watching.

Search Console for Google

Since AI Overviews and AI Mode are folded into Search Console totals, watch for pages where impressions hold steady or rise while clicks fall. That pattern can suggest an answer is being given on the results page. Compare it with your prompt panel to see whether your page is cited.

Enquiry source questions

Add an option such as "AI assistant or chatbot" to the "How did you hear about us?" field on forms, and ask the same question on calls. Many AI influenced visits arrive later as direct or branded searches, and this is often the only way to see them.

Our article on SEO data that guides decisions explains how to bring these signals into one monthly report.

Generative engine optimization: what to keep and what to ignore

Generative engine optimization has become a label for a mix of sound practice and speculation. A simple filter helps.

Worth doingTreat with caution
Clear answers, good structure and accurate business detailsClaims that a specific file or tag guarantees AI citations
Allowing the search crawlers you want to appear inRewriting every page in a question and answer format
Original examples, data you own and expert authorshipPublishing large volumes of AI written pages to cover every query
Consistent brand information across the webTools promising exact AI visibility scores without showing their method

Hypothetical example: a Dubai interior fit out firm finds that ChatGPT search never mentions it, while two competitors appear often. A check shows its firewall blocks unfamiliar crawlers, and its service pages describe the firm in vague terms. After allowing OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and rewriting service pages to state the services, sectors and areas covered, the firm adds the questions to its monthly prompt panel and tracks whether mentions appear over the following months.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what you want to protect.

Blocking the search crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, removes you from those platforms' search answers. Training crawlers, such as GPTBot, are controlled separately, so many businesses allow search access and decide on training separately. Agree the policy with whoever owns legal and brand decisions, then check that robots.txt and firewall settings match it.
