Upsell and Cross Sell Setups That Raise Average Order Value

How to increase average order value on Shopify and WooCommerce with upsells, cross sells, bundles, post purchase offers and delivery thresholds that add up.

GLOSS & HAMMER: A restaurant owner posting a job

To increase average order value, give shoppers a sensible reason to add one more item at the moment they are already buying: a bundle that saves effort, a delivery charge threshold just above the typical basket, or a one click offer after payment. The setups that work are relevant, honest and easy to decline. Pushy pop ups and unrelated add ons tend to cost more in abandoned carts than they gain.

This guide covers concrete setups on Shopify and WooCommerce, and how to work out delivery fee thresholds using your own UAE delivery costs rather than guesses.

Upsell and cross sell: what each one does

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they solve different problems.

TacticWhat it offersBest placementExample
UpsellA better or larger version of the item being viewedProduct pageA larger perfume size or a higher spec phone case
Cross sellA related item that completes the purchaseCart or drawerScreen protector with a phone, filters with a coffee machine
BundleA fixed or custom set sold togetherProduct and collection pagesSkincare routine set, gift box

Most stores benefit from one setup in each slot rather than several competing offers on the same page.

Setups that increase average order value on Shopify and WooCommerce

Upsells on the product page

Keep upsells to one or two options and make the difference obvious: more capacity, better material, longer warranty from the brand, or a pack size that lasts longer. Show the reason in a short line rather than just a second price.

On WooCommerce, each product has linked product fields for upsells and cross sells. According to the WooCommerce documentation, upsells usually appear below the product details, while cross sells appear on the cart page only when the cart layout includes a cross sells section. That last point catches many store owners out: assigning products does nothing visible until the theme or block layout shows them.

On Shopify, product recommendations depend on the theme, and dedicated upsell apps add more control over which product appears with which. Choose one app and test it carefully, because several apps injecting scripts into the same page slow it down.

Cross sells in the cart

The cart is the best place for small, low decision add ons: batteries, cables, care kits, gift wrapping, refills. Rules to follow:

  • Show items that are clearly compatible with what is already in the cart.
  • Keep the price of the add on well below the main item so it feels like an easy yes.
  • Allow adding with one tap, without leaving the cart.
  • Hide items that are out of stock or cannot be delivered to the shopper's emirate.

Product bundles

Product bundles raise order value while making the choice easier. They work well for routines (skincare, haircare), starter kits (coffee, fitness, baby products) and gifting seasons such as Ramadan, Eid and National Day.

Shopify's help centre defines a bundle as two or more related products, often offered at a discount, and notes that creating bundles requires a bundles app. On WooCommerce, the official Product Bundles extension by Woo supports fixed bundles, customer built boxes and bulk discount rules.

Decide early how bundles affect stock. A bundle should reduce the stock of each component, otherwise you risk selling sets you cannot pack. If your store syncs with an ERP or warehouse system, test bundle orders through to fulfilment before launch. Our guide to connecting WooCommerce with ERP, CRM and shipping covers this in more detail.

Post purchase offers

Post purchase offers appear after payment and before the order confirmation page. Because the shopper has already paid, the offer does not put the first order at risk. On Shopify, these offers run through post purchase apps; Shopify announced a dedicated app collection for this in its changelog. On WooCommerce, the same idea is usually delivered by a plugin or on the thank you page.

Keep post purchase offers simple: one item, one tap, clearly priced, closely related to the order. Make sure your payment gateway supports adding the item to the same payment, otherwise customers may be asked to pay twice.

Delivery fee maths for UAE stores

The shipping threshold, where delivery becomes included once the basket reaches a set value, is one of the most effective ways to raise order value. It only works if the numbers hold up.

Know your real delivery cost

Start with your actual cost per order from your courier or in house drivers, split by area. Delivering within Dubai often costs differently from sending to Al Ain, the northern emirates or remote areas. Include packaging, cash on delivery handling where applicable, and the cost of failed delivery attempts and returns.

Set the threshold just above the typical basket

Look at your order value distribution, not only the average. A practical approach:

  1. Find the order value most of your orders cluster around.
  2. Set the threshold a little above that point, close enough that one small add on gets a shopper over it.
  3. Check that the margin on the extra item covers the delivery cost you are absorbing.
  4. Make sure you have suitable lower priced items to suggest in the cart so shoppers can reach the threshold.

Hypothetical example: a store finds most orders sit slightly below a round number and its delivery cost per order is roughly the margin on one accessory. Setting the threshold at that round number, and showing accessories in the cart, means the extra margin pays for the delivery the store now covers. If the threshold were set far above typical orders, few shoppers would reach it and the offer would simply attract complaints about delivery charges.

Show progress clearly

A progress message in the cart, such as how much more is needed to qualify for included delivery, tells shoppers exactly what to do. Show it on the product page and cart, and update it immediately when items change. On WooCommerce, the built in delivery methods include a minimum order amount rule; on Shopify, delivery rates can be set by order value in the shipping settings or through an app.

Watch for side effects

  • Return rates on add on items bought only to reach a threshold.
  • Margin on discounted bundles combined with included delivery.
  • Cash on delivery orders that are refused at the door, which still incur delivery costs.

How to measure whether it worked

Average order value alone can mislead. If it rises while conversion rate falls, you may be earning less in total. Track these together:

  • Average order value
  • Conversion rate
  • Revenue per visitor
  • Attach rate for each offer (how often it is accepted)
  • Gross margin per order after delivery costs

Introduce one setup at a time and compare against a similar period, taking care to avoid comparing a sale week with a quiet one. Frequently asked questions

They can.

Each app may load its own scripts and styles on every page, even where it shows nothing. Install only the apps you actively use, remove old ones fully, and check page speed on mobile before and after installing. Where possible, choose apps that use theme app blocks or native platform features rather than injecting large scripts into the storefront.
