How to shortlist a web design company in the UAE: cut ten options to three using portfolio relevance, references, team location and support cover by emirate.

Finding the right web design company UAE businesses can rely on, without spending weeks in meetings, is a matter of cutting your long list in three passes. Judge relevance of past work, quality of references, and how well the team can support you where you operate. Done properly, this takes ten candidates down to three in a few working days, and leaves you with evidence rather than impressions for the final decision.
The method below is built for marketing managers and business owners who have a budget approved and a rough brief, but no preferred supplier yet.
Before you start: write a one page brief
Shortlisting goes wrong when every agency is judged against a different idea of the project. Spend an hour writing down the essentials first.
- Purpose: what the site must achieve, such as enquiries, online sales, recruitment or investor credibility.
- Audience: who visits, which languages they need, and whether they are businesses or consumers.
- Must have features: booking, ecommerce, a client portal, CRM integration, Arabic content.
- Constraints: launch window, internal approval process, and who will edit the site afterwards.
If you are unsure whether the site needs a business to business or consumer approach, our article on B2B and B2C website design decisions helps frame that part of the brief.
Web design company UAE search: building a long list of ten
Aim for around ten names from mixed sources so you are not relying on one channel:
- Recommendations from peers in your sector or business group.
- Sites you admire, checking the footer or asking the owner who built them.
- Search results and map listings for website design company UAE queries in your emirate.
- Agency directories and review platforms, used as a starting point only.
At this stage you are only collecting. Resist booking calls until the first filter is done.
Pass one: portfolio review for relevance
A portfolio review is the fastest filter, but only if you look for relevance rather than beauty. Most agencies can show attractive work. Fewer can show work that solved a problem like yours.
What to look for
- Similar complexity: a five page brochure site and a multi language ecommerce store are different disciplines.
- Similar buyer type: a site for a hospital, a law firm or a fashion retailer each have distinct content and trust needs.
- Live sites: open the actual sites on your phone. Check speed, navigation, forms and the Arabic version if there is one.
- Recent work: projects from the last two years show current skills; older work may reflect a different team.
Quick test on a live site
Pick two portfolio sites per agency and spend five minutes on each. Submit a test enquiry only if it is clearly appropriate; otherwise check that forms validate properly, menus work on mobile and pages load without long delays. Note anything broken. Agencies that maintain their own showcase sites poorly rarely maintain yours better.
After this pass, most buyers drop three to five names. Keep the agencies whose work is closest to your brief, even if their visual style is not your favourite. Style can be directed; relevant experience cannot be borrowed.
Pass two: references that tell you something
Ask each remaining agency for two client contacts, ideally one recent and one who has been with them for more than a year. A short call of ten minutes is enough if you ask focused questions:
- Did the project launch roughly when and how it was planned? If not, how did the agency handle it?
- Who did you actually deal with day to day?
- How quickly do they respond to issues since launch?
- Would you hire them again for the next project?
Online reviews can add context, but read the detail rather than the star rating. A handful of specific reviews describing the process is worth more than many short ones with no detail.
Watch how the agency handles the request itself. A prompt reply with relevant contacts is a good sign. Long delays, or references from unrelated industries only, suggest the portfolio may be thinner than it looks.
Pass three: team location and support cover across the emirates
This is the filter many businesses forget, and it often decides how the relationship feels after launch.
Can you meet the team?
Many projects run smoothly remotely, but workshops, content reviews and launch planning are often easier face to face. Ask whether the agency has an office you can visit, and which team members are based there. If your business is in Abu Dhabi or the northern emirates, ask how often they are willing to travel. Our guide to how an Abu Dhabi web design project differs from a Dubai one covers points worth raising.
Who supports the site after launch?
- Is there a named support contact or a ticket system?
- What working hours and days does support cover, and does that match your trading week?
- Can they help with Arabic content, hosting issues and urgent fixes, or only design changes?
Mixed teams are normal
A local office with developers elsewhere is common and is not a weakness in itself. What matters is clarity: who leads your project, who you can meet, and how work is handed between locations.
Compare web agencies side by side
Once you have five or six candidates left, compare web agencies on one sheet so the decision is visible to everyone involved. Score each from 1 to 5.
| Criterion | Question to answer | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio relevance | Have they built something close to our brief? | High |
| Reference quality | Did past clients describe a clear process and good support? | High |
| Team and location | Can we meet the people who will do the work? | Medium |
| Support cover | Does support fit our hours and emirate? | Medium |
| Range of services | Can they handle hosting, SEO, integrations or apps if needed? | Medium |
| Responsiveness | How quickly and clearly did they reply during shortlisting? | Low |

Hypothetical example: a clinic group in Sharjah starts with eleven names. Portfolio review removes five with no healthcare or booking work. Reference calls remove two whose clients described slow post launch support. Of the remaining four, one has no team that can visit Sharjah, which leaves three agencies for a proper interview.
Your agency shortlist of three: what happens next
With an agency shortlist of three, send each the same brief and ask for a short written response and a meeting. Comparing proposals is far easier when everyone answered the same questions. Our companion guide lists the questions to ask a web design agency before you sign, with examples of strong and weak answers.
Budget conversations also become clearer at this stage. Ask each agency to separate design from build in its estimate; website design cost in Dubai split between design and build explains why that split matters.

Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily.
Larger agencies often bring wider skills such as integrations, apps and marketing under one roof, which helps for complex projects. A small studio can give more senior attention on a simpler brochure site. Judge the team that will actually be assigned to your project and its relevant experience, rather than the overall headcount on the agency's website.
